POLISARIO bets on Saharawi people's belief in freedom and independence, says Addouh

June 9th School (refugee camps), June 23, 2014 (SPS) - The Speaker of the Saharawi National Council (parliament) Mr. Khatri addouh has highlighted that the Frente Polisario is betting on the Saharawi people's belief in their right to freedom and independence, adding that the negotiations under UN aegis is "a mean not an end goal."
During a lecture before a number of Saharawi cadres, Mr. Khatri Addouh, also head of Polisario Front's delegation to the negotiations with Morocco, stated that the negotiations are not a substitute for the fight, but rather complement and support it.
Reviewing the different tours of negotiations, the Saharawi official said that Rabat regime continues to escape from its obligations and commitments, particularly when comes to the Saharawi prisoners of war.
He went on saying that the plans put forward by certain parties as a basis for a solution to the conflict of Western Sahara "have failed" due to its disregard to the right of the Saharawi people to freedom and independence, adding that the so-called Moroccan Autonomy Plan has become "obsolete" being unrealistic and has nothing to do with the mechanisms of democracy.
He, in the same regard, said that the referendum is a based option, because it is line with international legality, democracy and the will of human being in the free choice.
Holding the United Nations the historic, legal and ethical responsibility, head of the Saharawi negotiating team emphasized that the attempt to deviate the Saharawi cause from its real and historic track is a "failed manoeuvre before the commitment by the Saharawis and Polisario Front to the respect for international legitimacy.
"The international community has come out with the conclusion that a solution to the Saharawi cause must take into account the will of the Saharawi people to decide their own future, called upon by UN resolutions as expressed in Secretary-General's latest report," underlined Mr. Khatri Addouh.
President of Saharawi Parliament revealed that the Moroccan regime still refuses to cooperate with UN efforts and endeavours undertaken by mediator Christopher Ross, despite the UN Security Council's latest recommendations.
Hoping that next April will be "a turning point", he recalled that the Saharawi party has "pressure papers" in light of the "favourable" regional and international changes and the climate of democracy and respect for human rights, but, he added, more essentially the mobilization by Sahrawi people, led by the Polisario Front, around the option of independence.
"Morocco is no longer of that great geo-strategic importance in North Africa and in the world as a whole," he pointed out.
By using dirty methods of war including exporting terrorism and drugs, the Moroccan occupation are trying desperately to tarnish the image of the struggle of the Saharawi people and their just cause, he pointed out. (SPS)

London, June 19, 2014 (SPS) - The British Parliament again drew Tuesday attention of the government to the state of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara and humanitarian situation in the Saharawi refugee camps.
In a written question, the member of British Conservative Party, MP Stephen Mosley, drew the attention of Mr. Hugh Robertson, Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, to the recent reports he has received on human rights violations in the Saharawi territories, following Morocco’s crackdown on demonstrations that left several people injured.
Mr. Robertson stated, in his reply, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs receives regularly reports on the situation of human rights in Western Sahara from UN rapporteurs, as well as from international rights and civil society organizations.
MP Stephen Mosley, on other hand, sent a written request to the UK Secretary of State for International Development, Mrs. Lynne Featherstone, on the situation of Sahrawi refugees, in which he asked her to assess the humanitarian situation in Western Sahara.
Responding to Mosley’s question, Minister Featherstone said that the humanitarian situation of the Saharawis is currently “stable,” adding that only the MINURSO (UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) is responsible for monitoring human rights, in addition to its task to monitor the ceasefire.
She also pointed out that there are many Saharawi refugees living in camps in Algeria, adding that Britain provides protection and assistance to the Sahrawi refugees through funding programmess of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Observers described the afro-mentioned reply by UK Minister Mrs. Featherstone as a new refutation to Morocco’s propaganda that the situation in the Saharawi refugee camps is disastrous.

Morocco's exports of phosphate from occupied Western Sahara (New report)

London, June 12, 2014 (SPS) -  Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW) published Thursday a “complete report listing all the clients, volumes, values and shipments relating to Morocco's exports of phosphate rock” from the occupied Western Sahara, indicated the organization in a statement on its official website.

The list presented in this report is complete for the calendar years 2012 and 2013, naming nearly all the shipments of the phosphates from occupied Western Sahara. The report attributes the purchases of Morocco’s production in Western Sahara in 2013 to ten named and two yet unknown importers in ten countries internationally. The two companies PotashCorp (US) and Lifosa (Lithuania), alone, accounted for 50% percent of all purchases.

The overview is made on the basis of tracking and anlysing 109 bulk vessels that arrived port in El Aaiun, Western Sahara.

The report details a total exported volume from Western Sahara in 2013 at 2,2 million tonnes, with an estimated value of $330 million, shipped in 48 bulk vessels. That is an increase of 400,000 tonnes from 2012, the report shows.

In addition to naming the involved companies, this report also identifies potential buyers, as well as a “green list” of companies previously associated with such trade, but which no longer purchase.

The phosphate rock is illegally exploited by the Moroccan government in Western Sahara, a territory that it is brutally occupying. The exports are Morocco’s main source of income from the occupied territories. Representatives of the Saharawis have been consistently outspoken against the trade, both in the UN, generally and to specific companies, recalled the statement.

WSRW called on all companies involved in the trade immediately halt all purchases of Western Sahara phosphates until a solution to the conflict has been found. Investors are requested to engage, or divest unless action is taken. (SPS)

The launching ceremony of the workshop was supervised by the Mauritanian minister of employment, vocational training and information technologies and communication, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ould Bedde Sidiya, on Sunday and was attended by numerous experts from Algeria, Egypt, Mauritania, Tunisia, and the Saharawi Arab Republic as well as specialists and experts of the African Union.
The Saharawi delegation is composed of Lehraitani Lehsen, Mohamed Salem Lebaid, and Hamdi El Hafed, respectively adviser to the presidency, director of the Sahrawi TV, and editor of 20 May Magazine.
This Africa Regional Internet Exchange Point (RIXP) and Regional Internet Carrier (RIC) Workshop aims to foster stakeholder discussions on supporting National Internet Exchange Points and Internet Service Providers to grow and become Regional Internet Exchange Points (RIXP) and Regional Internet Carriers (RIC) in order to promote intra-Africa internet traffic to be exchanged within the continent.
Organized by the Department of Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission, in collaboration with the Ministry of Employment, Training, and Information Communication Technologies of Mauritania, the event aims to discuss and make recommendations on how to address slow and expensive exchange of intra-African traffic via overseas hubs.
“The establishment of National and Regional Internet Exchange Points will provide the African continent with the opportunity to keep pace with advanced Nations and accelerate trade and greater integration of the continent” Said the Hon. Minister of Employment, Training and Information Communication Technologies of Mauritania, Hon. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ould Bedde Sidiya in his opening remarks.
The five (5) day workshop is a strategic follow up to the support provided by the African Internet Exchange System (AXIS) project of the AU to establish National Internet Exchange Points (IXPs). The workshop adopted policy recommendations to promote local hosting and peering and agreed on guiding minimum criteria for selecting national internet exchange points to be supported to grow into regional internet exchange points.
“We are in the era of the internet of things and things of internet for which Africa must be ready and should not miss this digital era like it did for the industrialization era. Today Africa is currently paying a huge amount of money to overseas carriers to exchange “local” (intra-continental) traffic on our behalf. This is both a costly as well as an inefficient way of handling intra-continental exchange of Internet traffic” said Mr. Mokhtar Yedaly, Head of Information Society Division of the AUC in his opening remarks.
